ACTION MANUAL VOL. I | Solo at Dortmunder Kunstverein | 10 Nov - 22 Dec 2012

11/30/12

ACTION MANUAL Vol. I / II presents a multi-site solo exhibition from New York-based German artist Nadja Verena Marcin, currently on view at Dortmunder Kunstverein and the Orangerie of the castle Rheda. ACTION MANUAL Vol. I / II displays a body of work driven by a range of artistic strategies. From meticulously directed short films to wild guerrilla performances, Marcin’s work continuously disrupts easy resolution by answering questions with questions. For ACTION MANUAL Vol. I / II, the two institutions will highlight the multifaceted quality of Nadja Verena Marcin’s work and its exploration of possibility and the limits of action. Marcin points at the matter that goes along with every action; the fear of providing the interest feeling with belief. In these works, Marcin's actions are seemingly ir/rational, but strive to construct a situation that grounds the self in an authentic form of existence. These actions carry a selfless, constructive potential where irrational and rational can coexist in balance and harmony.

Journey to Egypt - Live Performance | 18 November 2012

11/15/12

As the six hour live performance trip “Journey to Egypt" unfolds in a bus, 40 guests will be led to the exhibition halls of Dortmunder Kunstverein in Dortmund, the Skulpturenmuseum Glaskasten in Marl and the Orangerie at the castle of Rheda. The live performance goes back to an event in 2007, in which the artist went alone on a bus trip to the Sinai region, which was bombed a year earlier. The title refers to the children's' Journey to Jerusalem "and acts as a reminder for a romantic theme that has fallen by the current political situation of the Sinai into disrepute. The journey begins in the city of Cairo in the Catskills, leads to the Bedouins at the foot of Sinai and from there to a group of young Turks in West Germany, and finally to a castle with a princess and prince. It reflects upon the psychological processes of projection and faith.
